When students evaluate their performance, it is called student self-assessment. Students who regularly assess their learning obtain significant insights into learning needs and how to enhance learning. Even though self-evaluation is supposed to assist students with recognizing strengths and weaknesses, some students may not be sincere or unbiased in their assessments. Student self-assessment can be accomplished by having students compare their work to an example, practicing peer critique, journaling learning tasks, and comparing with lesson objectives. Teachers can also provide students with a rubric to guide their learning assessment.

Stakeholders make important data-based instructional decisions at all educational levels. A well-rounded assessment system emphasizes the evaluation of and for learning (Stiggins, 2014). High-quality classroom assessments and annual assessments, in balance with interim benchmark tests, help improve schools (Stiggins, 2014). As a result, integrating students into the evaluation process will lead to successful outcomes and give them a sense of control over their academic success (Stiggins, 2014). Involving students in the assessment process will also help them to develop skills essential to self-assessment while contributing to goal setting and achievement. Students will get first-hand information on their progress toward academic success and what they must do to improve if they fail to meet desired expectations.
