Learning environments are diverse, with students having varied abilities and needing different resources for academic success. To manage such classrooms, teachers practice differentiation. Differentiation in the classroom refers to tailoring teachings to match the requirements of individual students (Tomlinson, 2020). One strategy for managing a differentiated classroom is the use of small groups.

Small Groups Classroom Management Technique

Students in the classroom have a range of talents; some acquire concepts quickly, while others absorb topics better from their peers. As a result, small groups have become a popular method of diversified classroom management. Employing small-group allows for more flexibility and differentiation in learning. Students have more opportunities to participate when working with fewer pupils, and teachers focus more on keeping track of students while offering better and more personalized feedback and assistance (Ferlazzo, 2022).

Disadvantages of Small Groups in the Classroom and Steps to Overcome the Issues

As with all classroom management strategies, the small grouping has challenges. Some drawbacks faced when using small groups include students not getting along, high noise levels, some students becoming uncomfortable, especially the quiet ones, and some students may refuse to do any work. To offset these disadvantages, teachers might give responsibilities to students, create a learning atmosphere, and regular supervision groups (Tal, 2018). In group work, assigning responsibilities ensures that all individuals engage while reducing potential disputes. In addition, when giving work, the teacher considers the students' abilities and matches them to the position. As a result, the teacher will have an easier time monitoring and providing timely feedback to each group.
